LAUSD SUPERINTENDENT AUSTIN BEUTNER GIVES COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AT CAMINO NUEVO CHARTER ACADEMY DALZELL LANCE HIGH SCHOOL
LOS ANGELES – Austin Beutner, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, delivered remarks during the commencement ceremony at Camino Nuevo Dalzell Lance High School, a public charter school in one of the city’s most underserved communities that is sending the majority of its graduates to four-year colleges.
Since its first graduating class in 2008, the Dalzell Lance campus, which is part of the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy network, has maintained at least a 90 percent cohort graduation rate, with all seniors meeting the course requirements for the UC and Cal State systems. Most students come from the Westlake/MacArthur Park district, one of the city’s most densely populated areas where only 14 percent of adults hold a bachelor’s degree. This year’s graduating seniors earned acceptances to 9 UC campuses, 15 Cal State campuses, and 29 private colleges including Smith College, Bucknell University, and the University of San Francisco.
Other highlights about the Dalzell Lance 2018 graduating class:
- 72 percent of seniors (72 of 108) were accepted to a four-year college
- The majority of college-bound seniors are the first in their family to go to college
- 40 seniors are graduating with honors for completing at least one internship and 120 service hours. Altogether, the class completed 6,940 total service hours.
